Household Help and Community Resources for Seniors

Perhaps a loved one cannot get around as well as before or is experiencing loneliness and increased periods of isolation. A local Senior Center can go a long way toward providing activities and friendship. Some may even serve hot meals or snacks.

Many senior citizens can also benefit from hiring household help to do cleaning, cooking, or other everyday chores. Some communities have Meals on Wheels where volunteers deliver hot meals free to the door of frail senior citizens. Local nonprofit agencies may provide special transportation to take seniors to the grocery store or to the doctor.

California has a statewide program, In Home Support Services (IHSS), that provides home care to low–income elderly individuals who would be unable to remain safely in their own homes without assistance. The program is administered by the California State Department of Social Services and funded by federal Medicaid. Depending on the elderly person’s needs, services include meal preparation, laundry, bathing, grocery shopping, feeding, toileting and other paramedical services. To find out more about eligibility and services, contact your local county welfare office, which is listed in the County Government section of your telephone book.

Other states may have senior community programs that are jointly funded by Medicaid and state agencies. The availability of program services varies from state to state. You may also want to consider Senior Day Care and Residential and Assisted Living for your elderly relative.
